Fox’s Scheduling Philosophy

Coach Fox on whether or not he agreed with SEC Commissioner Mike Slive’s calling for conference schools to schedule more difficult non-conference games this season, saying that it dragged the conference’s RPI down last season:

“I’m right on board with that.  I think that we’re all trying to position ourselves to be impulsive and play.  We were dying to get strength of schedule games at Nevada, and it became very difficult to do because we had a good homecourt.  So I buy into that theory 100 percent because I believe in it.”

This year, we have a true road game at Missouri and, at VT, and we’re playing St John’s in Madison Square Garden and Illinois on a neutral court. I think we’ve scheduled ourselves, and many of those games we inherited, but I think Georgia has scheduled ourselves along that theory.”

Fox’s thoughts on his scheduling philosophy and how they scheduled numerous difficult out-of-conference games at Nevada:

“We played at Georgia, we played at Kansas, we played at Gonzaga’s tournament in Seattle.  We played UCLA down there. We played North Carolina. I think you have to give your team some tests along the way to figure out how good you are.  And we all know that you’re going to balance your schedule out with some games you should win.”

Some people tell us we’re overscheduled this year, but I don’t know, it depends on how much progress we make as a group.  You have to schedule yourselves to give yourself a chance in March because the selection committee needs to see that you made an effort to play at a high level.”
