It’s possible there might be a frontrunner for the opening at left tackle.
Head coach Mark Richt said Kiante Tripp, who was initially pencilled in at right tackle until Trinton Sturdivant went down with a season ending knee injury, spent more time at left tackle in Monday’s practice.
“I wouldn’t say it’s solidified but Kiante is spending more time at left than at right,” Richt said. “He’s helping us still be pretty solid at the tackle position and when he gets better we’ll be more than solid.”
After Sturdivant’s injury, the Bulldogs tried as many as five different linemen to fill the left tackle spot. One of the linemen in the running, who most likely is out now, was Vince Vance.
Richt said Vance’s progression at guard is keeping him from wanting to try Vance any more at left tackle.
“Vince has done a good enough job at left guard to where we don’t want to move him out,” Richt said.
Vance said while he took more snaps at tackle last season, he feels more acclimated to his new position on the line.
“I feel like a guard,” Vance said.
King says hamstring injury has given Samuel advantage
Running back Caleb King said that he believes his hamstring injury has given freshman Richard Samuel an advantage on the battle for the backup spot behind Knowshon Moreno.
“Of course (it has), I’m not practicing,” King said. ”I’ll be back midweek, probably Wednesday…Since we’re competing, the hamstring has caused a minor setback but I should be back and working hard.”
While King might think Samuel has a slight advantage, he said the battle will make things better for him.
“Competition always makes you better,” King said.
Samuel said he still thinks the race for the backup spot is even, but said he has been able to get some extra touches that have benefitted him.
“It has allowed me to get some reps which helps me out a little because the coaches see what I need help with,” Samuel said.
Green is finally out of the green
For the first time in a while, freshman receiver A.J. Green showed up in a red jersey instead of the green one, giving the Palmetto State native the go-ahead for contact.
While Green missed some practice time with a hip flexor, he said he doesn’t think he’s been slowed down much by the absence.
“I don’t think it’s slowed me down any, but it’s just all about getting reps,” he said.
Snapper position still ‘up for grabs’
When asked about the snapper position for field goals and punts, Richt said the spot wasn’t 100 percent certain between Bo Fowler and Ty Frix.
“Right now it’s still up for grabs,” Richt said. “(Fowler’s) No. 1 on the depth chart but it’s not a done deal.”
Frix became a player in the competition after snapper Jeff Henson was indefinitely suspended from the team. Henson was arrested and charged for public intoxication and urinating in public.
“Frix is doing a good job. If he can get better at blocking and covering he’ll make this a competition,” Richt said.
Quick slants
Along with Green, freshman receiver Tavarres King shook off the green jersey and practiced with the Bulldogs. When asked if Green was going to be on the depth chart anytime soon, Richt said, “He’s missed so much. The only thing I can tell you is we’re going to get him in the game. And we’re going to get Tavarres in the game too - when they’re healthy.”
Richt said Vance and center Chris Davis have been the two most consistent on the offensive line.
While Knowshon Moreno was wearing a green jersey again, Richt said his starting running back is experiencing some contact anyway.
Linebacker Marcus Washington, who is out for the year after going through shoulder surgery in the spring, was out with the team running laps and rehabbing.
“It’s good to have him back,” Richt said. “We’ll continue his rehab and get him ready for the spring.”
